Palmitos Park

2. August 2007 um 23:04 Uhr von me

Just heard a report of someone who has been to Palmitos Park today to pick up something. At the entrance they had to give up their mobiles and cameras.

He has told of screaming Animals, the smell of burnt flesch and the devastation there.  Somehow the whole situation raises a lot of questions.  What did they do to evacuate the animals from 12am-7pm ?? they had 7 hours.  All we so far know is that the parrots had been evacuated and the cages openend (a few minutes before the fire reached the park)  Which animals have been evacuated, how many and where are they??? There has been no information on this.  Somehow in every interview they talk, but you dont get any information of what has gone on.

Our first Mission to help the Animals

Somehow it just wasnt meant to be.

Already yesterday ist started of badly.  As i was getting Petrol for today, the car would not restart at the petrolstation.  As i had trouble like this before, i thought it would be the starter.  So i quickly borrowed a hammer form the petrol attendant and climbed under the car (much to the amusement of the onlooking men)  All the knocking did nothing, so i opened the bonnet and had a good look.  Everything in its palce, nothing loose, so it can only be the batterie.  Well i bought a new batterie and the nice gentleman from the station even put it in for me. All Clear sign for Gran Canaria.

1. August 2007 um 12:50 Uhr von me

Good News at last.  The Gouvernmant of Gran Canaria has asked for the alert to be scaled down to 1, which means that now The Gran Canaria Gouvernment is back in controll.  The fires seem to be in control and there are no news of new fires braking out or the existing spreading.

Here the lates t pictures of the firefighting, and of what awaits those returning to their homes.  It breaks your heart to see this.

Tomorrow we are going to take a drive into the mountains and see what we can do for the animals.  Some of them have been roaming around scared and without food and water for up to 5 days now.  What makes me sick to the stomach at this moment are the fire toursits.  Some of the roads down south are still closed due to the fires, so they are comming up north and aproaching the disaster area from this end, just to táke some holiday snaps.  Preferably the catch on camera one or two burnt down houses and if possible some dead animals.

8pm Update:

The director of Palmitos Park said in a Interview today that 30% of all Animals have died. The Park should have been evakuated from 12pm onwards and the fire only reached the vicinity of the Park at 9pm.  My Question is” What on earth had they been doing in that time?” Pedro Codino said “Within 10 minutes all hell broke loose, we had to open the cages for the Animals to escape, but a lot stayed because they didnt know it any other way and burnt to death.  80% of the Tucan have lost their life.  I dont want to start to think about how many others too.  I have the feeling they didnt take the matter seriously enough at the time.
