Good News at last.  The Gouvernmant of Gran Canaria has asked for the alert to be scaled down to 1, which means that now The Gran Canaria Gouvernment is back in controll.  The fires seem to be in control and there are no news of new fires braking out or the existing spreading.

Here the lates t pictures of the firefighting, and of what awaits those returning to their homes.  It breaks your heart to see this.

Tomorrow we are going to take a drive into the mountains and see what we can do for the animals.  Some of them have been roaming around scared and without food and water for up to 5 days now.  What makes me sick to the stomach at this moment are the fire toursits.  Some of the roads down south are still closed due to the fires, so they are comming up north and aproaching the disaster area from this end, just to táke some holiday snaps.  Preferably the catch on camera one or two burnt down houses and if possible some dead animals.

8pm Update:

The director of Palmitos Park said in a Interview today that 30% of all Animals have died. The Park should have been evakuated from 12pm onwards and the fire only reached the vicinity of the Park at 9pm.  My Question is” What on earth had they been doing in that time?” Pedro Codino said “Within 10 minutes all hell broke loose, we had to open the cages for the Animals to escape, but a lot stayed because they didnt know it any other way and burnt to death.  80% of the Tucan have lost their life.  I dont want to start to think about how many others too.  I have the feeling they didnt take the matter seriously enough at the time.

Weather 1 August

august 1st

The temperatures here on the Island have dropped back onto a normal level, and the high strong Winds which affected the fire fighting have dropped.  Here in the mountains of Teror we have 28.8° in the shade, some light clouds and a little breeze.  Lets hope it stays like that.

News on the Fire situation

This morning it has become very quiet about the fires.  The News which keep us posted have nothing new to report.  The people of Fataga, Tunte and Arteara were allowed last night back to their homes.  Montana la Data was already released for the people yesterday early evening.

I hope i have not spoken too  soon, just this minute 2 Fire-engines have raced with blue lights and sirens through Teror.

Here the latest Pictures of Fataga last night:

Just had a call from Renata, and we are discussing what we are going to do and where we can help best.  The people in the villages have been promised help from the Townhalls and Gouvernment, so there is no need of our help there.  Those Animals of Palmitos Park which have been rescued are beeing seen to and those which have been allowed to escape are now beeing looked for and attended to.  The Animalshelters are in no need of our help, as they managed to evacuate in time.  Banaderos Animalshelter is on the way to attend some of the Animals which are injured nd running free (more than likely many of them will be put to sleep)

Here in the mountains there are areas which will not be visited by anyone, and we have decided as soon as it is safe to drive into the mountains, and try to rescue or to put down food and Water for the Animals which are hiding up there.  If possible we will pick up (catch) the injured ones and get them treated by the Vet.  Im afraid that in a lot of cases the animals will be to scared to allow us near them, but we will try our best not to let them starve or suffer.

Renata needs all the Help she can get.  She is not a Animal rescue society, and does not get any Money from any Animal rescue societies.  She is a Privat Person (with very little income) who spends all her Energy and Money on helping Animals in need here on the Island.
